The time is right
Affordable housing in Maui is high on the list of citizen concerns. The need is evident and is touching all of us. According to the Hawaii Housing Policy Study 2003 by SMS Research and Marketing Services, Inc, there is a pent-up shortage of 5,000 to 8,000 affordable housing units in Maui. Additionally, the charts below indicates very clearly how income has not kept up with housing prices, and the index, which should ideally be at 100, is showing improvement, but is still below the low points of the early 1990's. The Affordability Index is now above 50% for the first time since 2003.
NHOM has been designated to receive $3,000,000 in 2009 from the HUD Neighborhood Stabalization Program (NSP) to purchase and rehabilitate foreclosed homes for resale to income qualified families earning no more than 120% of area median income as community land trust homes.
